Home-based Food Showcase

I was working on research for my other recently started writing adventure when I stumbled across the “Des Moines Metro Opera Wine and Food Showcase.” You can read the article I ended up writing about it on Monday, but the reason that I bring it up here is that I was terribly intrigued. I would love to go to this event. An event like this is meant to provide a variety of different options and, for a picky eater, that’s an ideal situation. However, my husband works that day, we can’t afford the tickets, and we can’t afford a babysitter.

Since this isn’t a possibility, I got thinking about ways that I could adapt this to our home life; ways that we could experience this without spending a lot of money. And what I came up with is to have our own Funk Family Food Showcase; a series of them, really. I’m thinking that once a month we can feature a different cuisine and have a day or night where we have a couple of dishes from that cuisine. Polish, German, Italian, Mexican…whatever strikes our fancy. And maybe we can also have a featured ingredient, like pineapple or parsnip or squash, that we use to make one dish a week. It sounds fun to me, and fun is always a good way to get me to attempt to expand my acceptable dishes list. But where to start? So…

    And then maybe an intercultural night with a food from Each cuisine!

    • That could be fun, especially if we made it a party that we invited family or friends too, presenting each of our favorite dishes from each food showcase. If the kids cooperated I could even offer up recipe books/sheets for those who came. And maybe do a foreign game or fun movie. It could really turn into something. Great suggestion!
